Meet Oanthata (Wanti)
Hi, I’m Oanthata Modise (pronounced wan-tuh-ta). I’m a third-year medical student from Botswana, a full-spectrum birth justice doula, and a peer lactation counselor.
My passion for birth work began when I was 15. My cousin—who I consider my sister—experienced the stillbirth of her second child. During that time, she was surrounded by the traditional postpartum care of Botsetsi, a practice from Botswana, and the loving support of our aunts. Watching her journey showed me how essential it is for people to be fully present and supported through every experience—whether pregnancy, birth, or loss.
I am passionate about creating safe, compassionate spaces for everyone, especially young mothers. I want each person I serve to feel heard, empowered, and truly present during these transformative moments. My work is deeply guided by my faith, my commitment to racial justice, and my respect for cultural practices that honor the whole person.
I believe every family’s story is unique. My role is to walk alongside you—tailoring this journey to create a safe, nurturing space where your voice is heard, your needs are respected, and your presence is cherished. I’m excited to learn and grow with you, and I know that together, we can break barriers.
